New York State Police on Sunday arrested a North Norwich couple following a report of abandoned animals.

Brittany Waldruff, 26 and Derrick Waldruff, 24, are charged with four counts of the misdemeanor of cruelty to animals.

New York State Police say the pair was arrested after troopers responded to assist the Norwich Dog Control Officer with an abandoned beagle and puppies at home on State Route 12 in the town of North Norwich.

Troopers say an investigation found that after being evicted from their upstairs apartment, the Waldruffs abandoned their pet beagle and her four new puppies without food or water inside the locked apartment causing extreme dehydration.

State police say the mother and her puppies were taken to Compassionate Care in Norwich and will be adopted out through that agency when they are healthy again.

Brittany and Derrick Waldruff were issued tickets returnable to the Town of North Norwich Court on September 14.
